Pre-Reading Assignments prior to  August 15th:

  • “Learning to Read and Write: Developmentally Appropriate Practice for Young Children”
  • “Teaching Decoding”

Optional Pre-Reading:

Day 1 August 15th (4.5 hours)
  • Research and Historical Context
  • Common Core Standards
  • The Reading Process

Homework:

  • “The Elusive Phoneme” (R151)
  • Chapter 10 and the Summary Report of “Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children” (R243 and R269)
  • Read about text complexity in the CCSS Appendix A, p 1-12.

Write up a reflection using the discussion questions from the handout.

Day 2: August 16th (4.5 hours)

  • Putting it All Together Suggested Sequence for First Several Weeks of Grade K or 1
  • Fall Preparation
